Alien Breed 35th Anniversary Collection
What critics said
Completexbox85This collection of some of the best games from Team 17’s library sets out to bring them back, updated for the modern era and modern Gamers and for the most part, it succeeds in this endeavour. But these titles haven’t aged very well and, although they can be entertaining and very tense and atmospheric at times, the developers have gone down the route of having them run on current systems with updated controls, rather than a full remaster with updated graphics, sound and so forth. Don’t get me wrong. I’m hoping for more anthologies such as this from studios and classic games from the 90s. Personally, I’d love to see even more Team 17 games from their backlog such as the Body Blows, Superfrog, Super Stardust and Project-X series brought back with such care and attention to the originals for a whole new generation to enjoy. But the fact remains the audience for these collections will always be very small and niche. My only slight niggle with this compilation myself is just how hard as nails and unforgiving the games will be to a casual gamer. I remember them being challenging ‘back in the day’ and maybe my reflexes aren’t as sharp as they were, but some of the gameplay is downright brutal at times. This could put off many newer gamers who might show some initial interest and takes the sheen of the rose-tinted filter of nostalgia for me. For the low price of only £20.99, you do get a lot of content in terms of bang for your buck. But as far as I’m aware there’s no physical edition for Alien Breed 35th Anniversary planned, so collectors might find this fact a disappointment when choosing whether to pick this up or not. Fans of the original games are sure to get a blast out of this anthology, however if you’re under the age of 20 and have no real interest in classic gaming from the 90s, then this gathering of shooty goodness from a simpler time may not be to your taste. But for this price, it’s definitely worth the some of your time if you’re up to the challenge.
ZTGD90Most of my complaints come from what this isn’t instead of what this is, and what this is is a very good collection of some really great games.
The Games Machine68Today, the structure seems repetitive, the rhythm mechanical, and the difficulty less calibrated than nostalgia would have us remember .
