Esoteric Ebb
What critics said
Eurogamer80Weaving Terry Pratchett, Terry Gilliam and more, Esoteric Ebb is a comedic D&D adventure where a waylaid Cleric is tasked with solving a crime, days before the world's first election.
PC Gamer90If you like RPGs, you owe it to yourself to play Esoteric Ebb.
GameSpot90I cannot say enough good things about Esoteric Ebb, which is positively stuffed with them. Like a good mimic, it's got teeth. It is both familiar in its shape and size and astonishing in its surprising depth and riches. Do not let its appearance fool you: There is a lot more to love about this "Disco-like" than its vibrant surface and wit might initially convey.
Esoteric Ebb news

Esoteric Ebb is the D&Disco Elysium I never knew I needed, but more importantly it's proof I'll never be cut out for political canvassing
Which way are you voting in the election? There’s an election coming, could I trouble you to ask which way you’re voting? ELECTION. YOU. VOTING? WHICH WAY? The time to place the great slip of paper into the holy box of ballots is almost nigh, my honoured friend, wherefore will thou be placing thine vote and whom will it be in favour of? There are a lot of ways you can ask someone which way they plan to vote. All of them are awkward. The awkwardness isn’t helped by the fact that, in these situati

2026's best RPG might look like Disco Elysium, but it was heavily inspired by Deus Ex, and its creator wants 'to do a first-person game at some point'

Playing Esoteric Ebb is like rolling the dice with a great DM
It took me a while to get into Esoteric Ebb, a new CRPG from developer Christoffer Bodegård. The elevator pitch is basically Disco Elysium, but in the fantasy style of Dungeons & Dragons: You play as a cleric wandering around a small town who's trying to figure out, among other things, the mystery of why a tea shop in town exploded, and all the while, you're having conversations with different character traits in your head. Like Disco Elysium, you see the world from an isometric, top-down perspe

Esoteric Ebb creator reckons most players only saw half the game, and that's fine by him: 'You've got to miss stuff in order to feel like the world is bigger'
'I write 700,000 words and then I'm expecting most of it to not be seen on a normal playthrough'

Esoteric Ebb review
When I tell people about Esoteric Ebb, I mostly say that I play an idiot, because there's something deeply comforting about being a waylaid government oaf. Sure, I've pledged allegiance to hierarchy and bureaucracy, but there's always the possibility of doing something naughty or exciting or even something unexpectedly brave. As an unassuming representative of the establishment, I dance on the knife's edge of plausible deniability and weaponised incompetency. Ultimately, though, there's always t

Esoteric Ebb Review - Chaotic Good
In one of Esoteric Ebb's chambers lies a chest. Above it, a sign: "Not a mimic." Snell, your goblin companion, deduces the most obvious outcome: The sign is the work of some prankster who's hoping to get one over on whichever unsuspecting rube decides to saunter into this secreted away room, ignore the sign, and loot the chest. Mimics are often "chest-shaped" like this--the game's joke, not mine--and seeing as how they are a trick as old as fantasy itself, it doesn't take a genius to piece toget
