Guild Wars 3 dev wants you to be able to take a break for months at a time and know you're "not going to be left behind"

Colin Johanson doesn't think the MMO is dying. He would say that: he's the studio head of Arenanet, the team behind the Guild Wars series. He's also talking to me directly after showing off combat and movement in the team's next MMO, Guild Wars 3. That said, what is more unexpected is that he says the genre is "as big as it's ever been." You just need to expand your definition of an MMO.

"20 players is the sweet spot": Guild Wars 3's action game combat is a first for MMOs, but it doesn't work at traditional raid scale

Arenanet are keeping a lot of Guild Wars 3 hidden away. Throughout the short presentation of their new fantasy MMO, the refrain is 'We're not talking about that yet'. Mounts, professions, dynamic world events, even shops and the economy are all things the developers will talk about in the future. Though, what they did show more than made up for it.

Guild Wars 3's devs think they've found an answer to one of MMOs' biggest problems, but can ArenaNet pull it off?

Close your eyes and imagine a standard MMORPG. The way it moves, the way it plays. Save for a few finer intricacies, they've largely played the same for over two decades. A big action bar, the same sorts of quests, the same sort of progression. Guild Wars 3 is aiming to fix that.

Many live service games are just an MMO subscription "hidden inside of a neat 'optional' package", argue Guild Wars 3 devs in a post about the new game's monetisation

Guild Wars 3 developers ArenaNet have published a Hot Take of sorts about the MMORPG genre, while explaining in broad strokes how their forthcoming "modern evolution" will differ from Guild Wars 1, released in 2005, and Guild Wars 2, released in 2012. As they note, MMOs and gaming at large have changed enormously over the course of the series. Entire business models, storage formats, and subsets of bikini armour have come and gone. In particular, the developers offer some thoughts about how the

We now know when Guild Wars 3 takes place, but even 20 years after the series began, it doesn't sound like we'll see an actual storied guild war

Guild Wars - that series of popular massively-multiplayer online role-playing games - is named after three legendary in-universe battles, which are foundational to its story. However, two games in and 20 years later, we've still never actually seen one of these battles ourselves. And that doesn't look to be changing with Guild Wars 3.

With Guild Wars 3 announced at long last, here's why its beloved predecessor has survived the test of time

This year's Summer Game Fest was packed full of plenty of great reveals, but for my money, Guild Wars 3 was one of the biggest bombshells. There had been whisperings of its existence, a few stray job postings here and there, but to actually see it on the big stage was a huge deal to all lovers of MMOs.

The Guild Wars games have always been set in a world abandoned by the gods, in new MMO Guild Wars 3, you'll see why they left

If you've played Guild Wars or its sequel, you'll know that the land Tyria is a godless place. It didn't used to be, but more than 1200 years before the events of the original 2005 MMO, the gods upped sticks and abandoned the planet, leaving the different guilds their own devices. As the series' name would suggest, those devices were largely swords and siege weapons. In looking for a good spot in the series' timeline to set a new game that would be as alien to people who have played the games fo
