What critics said
TheSixthAxis80The Runner series is amongst my favourite driving games of all time, and over the hill is a unique take in the same spirit as those games. Its cosy, calming outlook and laidback vibes could have felt out of place, but this is an adventure game, in the truest sense of the word.
Entertainium100Funselektor Labs’ Over the Hill is yet another certified casual gaming masterpiece.
Evilgamerz69Over the Hill is a nice, cozy game where exploration, leisurely driving, and small terrain challenges blend well. The attractive design and excellent music make traversing nature a pleasant experience, while rewards and upgrades keep you occupied along the way. The stuttering music and unclear commentary are a shame, but they hardly got in the way of my enjoyment. However, it does feel like the world and vehicle customizations could offer even more possibilities, and that a major update could make this a more substantial game. Those who mainly drive from one mission to the next will therefore sometimes miss some variety. With friends, the game will be much more fun for chatting together. Give yourself the space to wander around and try a tricky slope, and Over the Hill truly shines. Just perhaps you shouldn't take that tempting shortcut through the trees.

Art of Rally follow-up Over the Hill's biggest success is finding a way to be a driving game that asks you to take it slow
I'd nearly forgotten Over the Hill's predecessor, Art of Rally, was a racing game. But that's not meant as a slight. It's just that, for all the happy hours I poured into it, I don't recall doing a single race. Instead, it was the aimless meandering, the soothing rhythms of exploration and absent-minded collectible hunting in its free-roam mode that held me transfixed. So the fact Over the Hill completely jettisons the racing stuff and leans entirely into the meditative bit - it even starts with

Over the Hill's off-roading simulation winches you in with a more laid-back take than SnowRunner's, but it'll still bite careless drivers
Over the Hill, a rather chillaxed take on brutal Saber Interactive off-roading sims like SnowRunner, is the latest game from vibesy driving enthusiasts Funselektor. The folks behind the likes of Art of Rally and Absolute Drift have assembled untamed wildernesses in the cold Canadian hills and the boiling desert of Algeria, before handing myself and Julian the keys to some 4x4s. Here’s our verdict.

Over the Hill, SnowRunner's hippie off-roading cousin from the Art of Rally devs, gets an October release date
Fire up the Landy! Over the Hill, Funselektor and Strelka Games' off-roader which takes the hardcore trail-running you get in a sim like SnowRunner and sands off the edges a bit to make for more chill countryside-roaming, finally has a release date. It's set to motor onto the scene in October, following a Steam Next Fest demo which I dug.

Over the Hill's Next Fest demo promises a stylized off-roading game for people who actually like to drive
Forza Horizon is fine, I guess, but for my money this is where it's at.

Over the Hill might slap a chill sheen over SnowRunner’s rugged off-roading, but it’ll still drown your jeep in a second if you let it
I really should learn to take this stretch of trail a bit more carefully. The one that runs precariously alongside the edge of a lake, dipping and getting muddier right at the point when it’s easiest to gently stumble into the water if you’re not paying enough attention. The one which seems the only passable route around a mountain to the final cabin I’ve yet to visit in this autumnal stretch of Canadian backwoods. I really should be more careful, I lament as my Land Rover sits uselessly slumped

Over the Hill looks like SnowRunner's cosy off-roading cousin, and its new trailer shows off muddy motoring in Algeria ahead of release later this year
I've really dug Funselektor's minimalistic and relaxed vibe-heavy arcade racers over the past few years. Absolute Drift's brill, Art Of Rally's great, and I also liked retro F1 management sim Golden Lap. Their latest work in collaboration with Strelka Games - due out this year - is off-roader Over the Hill, a SnowRunnery terrain-treverser for people who want more of a driving dreamy sojourn than they do a driving Dark Souls, and they've just shown off a look at its version of Algeria.
