GTA VI, Xbox Restructuring and Switch 2 Define September
September’s gaming business is pulled between rising blockbuster anticipation and a costly development reset: Rockstar expands the Grand Theft Auto VI campaign, while Microsoft restructures Xbox and studios face layoffs, closures and cancellations . .
Grand Theft Auto VI receives a PEGI 18 rating and a US M rating, with descriptions citing prominent drug use, sexual content and decapitation; PEGI later removes its listing after the content details emerge . Rockstar says the game avoids direct references to current politics, instead using satire and exaggerated versions of real-world trends
.
The campaign also extends beyond the game itself: Rockstar and Atlantic Records announce a 34-track Grand Theft Auto VI album for November . Anticipation for the release is reportedly contributing to a 30% rise in PlayStation 5 and Xbox sales in the UK

Xbox Restructuring Moves Halo Under Activision
Microsoft’s Xbox reorganization eliminates 268 roles and puts development of the next mainline Halo under Activision, through a new team separate from Call of Duty . Halo Studios shifts toward supporting existing games, while World’s Edge loses nearly half its staff and reportedly has a project canceled
.
The upheaval extends beyond those teams. Ninja Theory enters consultation ahead of a proposed closure after two acquisition agreements fall through, and Gears of War: E-Day loses its story director shortly before launch . Undead Labs becomes independent and employee-owned, but also cuts staff as State of Decay 3 remains in development
.
Other studios face funding problems and shutdowns, including Heart Machine, which lays off nearly all its staff after a publisher withdraws funding, and Polyarc, which closes after 12 years . The cuts arrive as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says Xbox needs a sustainable business model, following more than 5,750 Xbox-related job cuts across three years

. Embark Studios is testing an opt-in PvE mode for Arc Raiders, offering players an alternative to its existing PvPvE format
.
Microsoft’s subscription strategy moves in a different direction. Starting in November, Game Pass cloud gaming allowances are set at 15 hours per month for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and five for Essential, with additional time available for purchase . Microsoft says the limits address operating costs and estimates that 4% of subscribers will be affected
.
Blizzard also sets long-range expectations, announcing Diablo 5 for spring 2029 and a new StarCraft open-world shooter for spring 2030, alongside World of Warcraft: Forever . The announcements put distant franchise bets alongside more immediate changes to existing games and services.
