GTA 6 Gameplay Reveal, Witcher 3 Remastered, Fable Delayed
Grand Theft Auto VI dominates the week twice: Take-Two Interactive escalates its leak investigation before Rockstar Games delivers the first major official gameplay showcase. Gamescom 2026 also reshapes the release calendar, with Fable and Squadron 42 moving into 2027 while The Witcher 3 receives a substantial free remaster.
Grand Theft Auto VI Turns Leak Crisis into Biggest Reveal
Take-Two Interactive expands its legal response to the Grand Theft Auto VI leaks by subpoenaing Microsoft, Discord, and X for information connected to the ongoing investigation. New footage reportedly includes nudity, while the person behind the leaks threatens further story spoilers and calls for protests outside Rockstar Games and Take-Two offices.
Rockstar Games eventually addresses the situation, describing the leaks as “heartbreaking” and warning that the unauthorized footage could damage the intended experience. The studio also apologizes for the lengthy wait for an official look at the game, setting the stage for its extended presentation.
The official Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look presents 27 minutes of PlayStation 5 gameplay across Vice City and the wider Leonida region. The showcase focuses on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, their criminal careers and relationship, driving, exploration, gunfights, and a revised wanted system. +1
Rockstar says the Grand Theft Auto VI map is twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V’s, while an 80-hour estimate reflects one developer’s playthrough with optional objectives rather than a confirmed completion requirement. Digital Foundry’s analysis identifies the footage as apparently running at native 1440p and a generally stable 30 frames per second, with Rockstar still uncertain about a 60fps mode.
The showcase becomes the biggest gaming stream of 2026 so far, with reaction streams peaking at 3,970,738 viewers across livestreaming platforms. Rockstar also confirms that the game has no generative AI or microtransactions, while a PC release date remains unannounced for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.
GTA 6 Release Pressure Pushes Fable and Squadron 42 into 2027
Playground Games and Xbox Game Studios move Fable from its original October 2026 target to February 23, 2027. The delay gives the RPG more development time and places it outside Grand Theft Auto VI’s crowded release window, with Xbox continuing to position Fable as a Game Pass title.
Gamescom provides a much closer look at Fable through an 18-minute Bowerstone quest walkthrough and a separate combat presentation. The footage highlights spell-slinging and style-weaving systems that let players combine abilities and approach encounters according to their preferred playstyle.
Cloud Imperium Games delays Squadron 42, the Star Citizen single-player spin-off, to the second quarter of 2027 because Chris Roberts believes Grand Theft Auto VI could overwhelm its launch visibility. The decision shows that GTA 6 is affecting not only development priorities but also how publishers assess the attention available around a release.
Grinding Gear Games sets Path of Exile 2’s version 1.0 launch for December 11, 2026, after a year in Early Access. The action RPG also becomes free-to-play on PS5 at launch, ending its current paid entry model.
The Witcher 3 Remastered Makes CD Projekt Red’s Biggest Games New Again
CD Projekt Red launches The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered on September 29 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Existing owners receive the overhaul as a free upgrade across supported versions, including physical owners of the original Switch release.
The remaster updates visuals, combat, traversal, movement, mount handling, enemy behavior, progression, and the skill tree, while including the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. CD Projekt Red presents it as a broad technical and gameplay overhaul rather than a basic current-generation port.
The studio also reveals the first proper trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past. The expansion sends Geralt to the cursed realm of Letten after Dandelion disappears and adds a chain weapon, new enemies, and additional locations.
Further ahead, CD Projekt Red targets 2028 for The Witcher 4 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, though the studio stresses that the window is not a fixed launch date and could slip. The company plans to show more of The Witcher 3 expansion at Gamescom before that longer-term sequel arrives.
Gamescom 2026 Expands the Strategy and RPG Release Pipeline
The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day campaign earns strong Gamescom previews for its technical presentation, focused structure, and emotional return to Marcus Fenix and Dom. Digital Foundry describes the Unreal Engine 5 campaign as being in excellent technical shape, while other previews praise its combination of familiar cover shooting and new ideas.
Ubisoft announces Rainbow Six Tactics, a single-player turn-based strategy game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The spin-off combines Rainbow operators, reconnaissance drones, destructible environments, and an XCOM-style tactical structure under the command of Six.
Paradox Development Studio reveals Afterworld, a post-apocalyptic grand strategy game set in a procedurally generated North America and its first original setting in more than a decade. Amplitude Studios also announces Humankind II for 2027, with climate change and a new approach to historical strategy among its central themes.
Square Enix shows more of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, including The Weapons and submarine combat, while confirming a simultaneous launch on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2, in spring 2027. The sequel is positioned as the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Revisit Digital Ownership
PlayStation users organize a worldwide PS5 blackout in opposition to Sony’s planned end of new PlayStation disc releases from 2028. The protest follows a reminder that digital games are licensed rather than sold, language also used by Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo.
Xbox takes a more accommodating approach to existing physical libraries by testing a disc-to-digital program for Insiders. The initial rollout supports 1,000 Xbox One and Xbox Series titles at no additional charge, but the digital entitlement remains tied to the disc and can be lost if the disc is sold.
Microsoft also describes Project Helix as a family of next-generation devices rather than a single console, with affordability a stated priority as hardware costs increase. The company has not yet provided the lineup or detailed specifications.
Nintendo announces a $529.99 Nintendo Switch 2 bundle containing a digital copy of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and three months of Nintendo Switch Online, scheduled for October. The package arrives alongside a planned September price increase and a more expensive return for the Mario Kart World bundle.
The Nintendo Switch 2 also expands its library with Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 on August 27, bringing Metal Gear Solid 4 beyond its previous PS3 exclusivity. The collection launches on both Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch.
Double Fine Goes Independent as Live-Service Studios Pull Back

Double Fine Productions completes its separation from Xbox and regains ownership of its intellectual property and publishing rights. Tim Schafer says purchases of Double Fine’s games now support the independent studio rather than Microsoft, giving the developer direct control over its catalog as it returns to Kickstarter and game-jam activity.
Riot Games plans to wind down active development on 2XKO in December after player retention fails to establish a sustainable long-term path for the fighting game. 1047 Games likewise ends active development on Splitgate: Arena Reloaded and Empulse, moving both games to peer-to-peer hosting because neither generates enough revenue to cover dedicated-service costs.
EA confirms that leaked footage from EA Motive’s previously unseen Marvel’s Iron Man game is genuine. The video is described as a test trailer for the upcoming open-world project, but EA and Motive have not announced a release date and ask fans to wait until the team is ready to show more.
