Blizzard’s Diablo V, Wardogs Breakout, Kojima’s PHYSINT
Blizzard uses BlizzCon 2026 to put its biggest franchises on a far horizon, while Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT moves more clearly into Xbox’s orbit. Meanwhile, Wardogs becomes the week’s breakout commercial success as studio closures and layoffs underline the industry’s continuing instability.
Blizzard Announces Diablo V and a StarCraft Open-World Shooter
Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon 2026 announcements center on Diablo V for spring 2029 and a new StarCraft open-world shooter for spring 2030. Blizzard says the unusually distant release windows are intended to demonstrate confidence that both projects can ship on schedule.
Diablo V takes place 100 years after Diablo IV in a post-apocalyptic world without heroes, while Blizzard has not announced platforms or a specific release date. StarCraft instead moves away from the series’ real-time strategy roots toward an open-world first-person shooter that Blizzard describes as closer to a traditional boxed release than a live-service game. +1
Blizzard also confirms World of Warcraft: Forever as its Classic+ project and shadow-drops the first new Warcraft III campaign in more than 20 years. Diablo IV expands to Nintendo Switch 2 with the Age of Hatred Collection and a new season, while a Diablo animated series enters development at Netflix.
Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT Moves to Xbox With Bill Skarsgård
Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT shifts from Sony Interactive Entertainment toward Xbox after reports that Sony steps away over concerns about the project’s budget, deadlines, profitability, and lack of permanent exclusivity. The game is now presented as an Xbox-published project.
During Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, Kojima names Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT’s lead actor and describes the action-espionage game as the culmination of more than 40 years of his career. He also says OD, the horror game being developed with Xbox, is progressing smoothly.
Wardogs Becomes Bulkhead’s Million-Selling Steam Breakout
Bulkhead and Team17’s Wardogs turns its Steam Early Access launch into one of the week’s biggest commercial stories. The PC shooter sells more than 1.25 million copies on its first day, passes two million copies in five days, and exceeds 400,000 concurrent Steam players, with a PS5 version still to come.
The success prompts Everplay, Team17’s owner, to increase its shareholding in Bulkhead while reporting that Wardogs and Hell Let Loose: Vietnam are outperforming expectations. The game’s momentum is complicated by CEO Joe Brammer’s comments that the studio screens candidates for “anti-crunch” views and expects crunch to occur during development, prompting backlash and a follow-up statement.
Polyarc, Heart Machine, and Build A Rocket Boy Face Closures
Polyarc, the Seattle studio behind Moss and Moss: Book II, shuts down after nearly 12 years and winds down active development. The closure comes only two months after Moss: The Forgotten Relic, which could be the studio’s final project.
The cuts extend beyond virtual reality. Heart Machine lays off nearly everyone after a publisher declines to proceed with an unannounced game, while Build A Rocket Boy faces another reported layoff wave and a possible shutdown following the troubled release of MindsEye. KO_OP separately confirms that it eliminates 13 roles. +2
Bungie Delays Marathon’s Permanent PvE Update
Bungie delays Marathon’s next major update, Symbiosis, from September 22 to December 8. The update includes the shooter’s long-awaited permanent PvE mode, while Bungie moves away from its original strict seasonal schedule and reduces the frequency of updates.
The delay reflects a broader change to Marathon rather than a simple scheduling slip. Bungie says player feedback is forcing adjustments to both the game and its delivery model, with the studio repositioning Marathon toward a more dynamic survival experience.
Nintendo Switch 2 Builds a Stronger Release Pipeline
Nintendo Switch 2 receives a major strategy RPG launch with Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave on September 17. Early reviews praise Intelligent Systems and Nintendo’s sprawling story, combat systems, character work, and side quests, though reviewers also flag uneven pacing, a single save slot, and diluted difficulty in places. +1
Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja also announce that Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember launches on March 4, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with day-one availability through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. A free alpha demo is available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, offering character creation and three-player multiplayer.
The Switch 2 pipeline also shows signs of growing pressure to polish ports. IO Interactive delays the Switch 2 version of 007 First Light to March 2027, while Cold Iron Studios moves the Switch 2 version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 to early 2027; NEOWIZ and Lizard Smoothie still launch Shape of Dreams on Switch 2 alongside its PS5 and Xbox Series versions. +1
Grand Theft Auto VI Expands Its Music and Marketing Plans
Rockstar Games and Atlantic Records announce Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a 34-track collection launching in November with contributions from Yung Lean, Travis Scott, Morgan Wallen, Keith Richards, and other artists. Six songs are already available to stream, while CD and vinyl editions are open for pre-order.
Rockstar also receives approval to negotiate a discreet real-world Grand Theft Auto VI marketing campaign in Miami Beach, while legal filings appear to acknowledge a 32-player online format that remains in development. The marketing expansion arrives as Rockstar faces a tribunal over the dismissal of 31 employees connected to union activity and allegations that the studio monitored a union-organizing Discord server. +2
Monster Hunter Wilds Removes Paid Character Editing
Capcom plans to make character editing free and unlimited in Monster Hunter Wilds when the Ascendance expansion arrives in 2027. Players will be able to change their hunters’ and Palicos’ appearances without purchasing Character Edit Vouchers.
Ascendance adds a new storyline, areas, monsters, actions, and Master Rank, with Tokyo Game Show footage confirming Teostra as a returning huntable monster and showcasing the new monster Araketa.
