Diablo 5 Announced, Polyarc Shuts Down, Marathon Delayed
Blizzard looks far beyond the current release cycle with Diablo 5, a new StarCraft shooter, and World of Warcraft: Forever, while Bungie reshapes Marathon around a permanent PvE mode. At the same time, Polyarc and Heart Machine face severe studio cuts, making the week a stark contrast between ambitious future plans and present-day instability.
Blizzard Sets 2029 and 2030 Release Windows for Diablo 5 and StarCraft
Blizzard announces Diablo 5 for spring 2029 and a new StarCraft open-world first-person shooter for spring 2030 at BlizzCon 2026. The StarCraft project moves the franchise away from real-time strategy and toward an open-world shooter inspired in part by the western series Deadwood.
The unusually distant dates are deliberate, with Blizzard presenting them as evidence that both projects can ship on schedule. Diablo 4 receives no further expansions before Diablo 5, although Blizzard still plans to add the Amazon class during the first half of 2027.
World of Warcraft: Forever also becomes official as Blizzard’s long-rumored Classic+ project, and its beta draws what one developer calls the company’s strongest response in 17 years. A gamepad option fuels speculation about a console version, while the developers say Forever’s expanded design makes a separate World of Warcraft 2 unnecessary.
Polyarc, Heart Machine, and Build A Rocket Boy Face Studio Crises
Polyarc, the Seattle-based developer behind Moss, shuts down after 12 years and ends active development only two months after releasing Moss: The Forgotten Relic. The studio’s closure places its VR mouse adventure series among the week’s clearest examples of how quickly a developer’s future can disappear after a new release.
Heart Machine also lays off nearly everyone after an unnamed publisher withdraws funding for its next game, leaving the studio behind Hyper Light Drifter and Hyper Light Breaker at an uncertain crossroads. Build A Rocket Boy faces another reported layoff wave around MindsEye, with staff messages suggesting the studio may be shutting down.
The pressure extends beyond those developers: worker-run studio KO_OP eliminates 13 roles, while unionized King employees plan a Swedish strike if stalled collective-bargaining talks remain unresolved. Together, the announcements show a week in which layoffs, withdrawn funding, and labor disputes affect studios at very different stages of development.
Wardogs Sells 2 Million Copies as Crunch Debate Intensifies
Bulkhead’s early-access shooter Wardogs sells more than 2 million copies in five days and exceeds 400,000 concurrent players on Steam, making it the week’s breakout commercial success. Everplay, Team17’s owner, responds by increasing its shareholding in Bulkhead after reporting that Wardogs and Hell Let Loose: Vietnam are outperforming expectations.
The success is accompanied by a backlash over Bulkhead’s workplace culture. CEO Joe Brammer says the studio checks candidates’ social media accounts and avoids people who frequently criticize crunch, while also arguing that long hours will happen during development. The comments prompt further criticism and a follow-up statement as Wardogs’ sales momentum puts the studio under greater scrutiny.
Bungie Delays Marathon Symbiosis Update for Permanent PvE
Bungie delays Marathon’s Symbiosis update from September 22 to December 8 as it reworks the extraction shooter around player feedback. The update’s defining addition is a permanent PvE mode, and Bungie abandons the strict seasonal schedule that originally shaped the game’s content plan.
Bungie describes the changes as a broader shift in what Marathon is building and how it delivers content, moving the game toward a more dynamic survival experience. The delay therefore represents more than a missed date: it gives the studio additional time to establish the game’s next chapter before its largest planned update arrives.
Nintendo Switch 2 Release Calendar Gains and Loses Major Games
Nintendo Switch 2’s upcoming software calendar produces both delays and new release commitments. IO Interactive moves the Switch 2 version of 007 First Light to March 2027 for additional performance polish, while Cold Iron Studios delays Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 on the platform to early 2027.
Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo provide a firmer date for Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, which launches on March 4, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 with day-one Xbox Game Pass Ultimate availability. A free alpha demo on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S includes an in-progress character creator, three-player online multiplayer, and a reward for the full game.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17 after its review embargo lifts to broadly positive results. Reviewers praise Intelligent Systems and Nintendo’s strategy RPG for its story, combat, characters, and side content, while noting uneven pacing, a single save slot, and occasionally diluted difficulty.
Tokyo Game Show 2026 Ends Early as PHYSINT Reveals Its Lead Actor
Tokyo Game Show 2026 cancels its scheduled final day as a typhoon warning approaches Japan, cutting short what was planned as the show’s longest edition. The cancellation limits additional hands-on coverage of upcoming games, including Nintendo Switch 2 titles such as Resident Evil Requiem and Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection.
The event still produces a major reveal during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show broadcast, with Hideo Kojima confirming Bill Skarsgård as the lead actor in PHYSINT. Kojima describes the Xbox-published action-espionage game as the culmination of more than 40 years of his career, while Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hanabe remain attached.
Xbox also adds Shape of Dreams to Game Pass on launch day for Xbox Series X|S, alongside its PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 release. Capcom meanwhile confirms that Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is planned for 2027, with Teostra, the new monster Araketa, Master Rank progression, and free unlimited character editing included in the expansion’s plans.
Level-5, Insomniac, and Sony Face Player Pushback
Level-5 apologizes as backlash grows over generative AI use in trailers and presentations for upcoming games, including Professor Layton material. The company says some flagged examples result from human error and begins reuploading affected trailers after fans identify visual anomalies.
Insomniac Games separately confirms that Marvel’s Wolverine contains no generative AI after players raise concerns about strange details in the game. The studio also releases an update that reduces the prominence of Wolverine’s scent trails and Audio Sense indicators following criticism of the game’s “fart gas” mechanic.
Sony Interactive Entertainment takes a more direct approach to another community-made project, asking the creator of an unofficial The Last of Us Part 2 PC multiplayer mod not to release it. The nine-month project, which would have added PvP multiplayer, is canceled before its planned launch after the development team receives Sony’s letter.
Control Resonant Reviews Arrive Alongside Huge Final Fantasy 7 Plans

Control Resonant, Remedy Entertainment’s sequel to Control, launches on PlayStation 5 on September 24 after reviews praise its larger Manhattan setting and supernatural storytelling. The sequel shifts toward melee-focused combat and a semi-open world, while PlayStation 5 Pro and PC coverage highlight the performance of Remedy’s Northlight engine.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, is expected to require around 200GB on PlayStation 5. Director Naoki Hamaguchi says the game will not fit entirely on a launch disc, while previews point to an open-world map, Highwind travel, Wutai content, and planned DLC involving Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine.
Grand Theft Auto VI also receives a major promotional push, with Rockstar Games and Atlantic Records announcing a 34-track original album tied to the upcoming crime game. Six songs are already available to stream, and the full album is scheduled for release in November with CD, vinyl, and digital pre-order options.
